Hamish Ogston CBE
Hamish Ogston is an active philanthropist, supporting a range of initiatives related to health, heritage and music in and outside the United Kingdom.
An article from the Sunday Telegraph on July 2nd 2006, made public his desire to donate his capital to good causes. Since then, Hamish has donated over £8.5 million - find out more on his personal website. Within the next 12 months his outstanding pledges and the on-going appraisals of half a dozen opportunities to invest in charities will hopefully result in a further £10 million of donations, with much more to follow in subsequent years.
Hamish is an entrepreneur who co-founded a number of businesses including Europe’s first retail loyalty card programme, an incentive & motivational award programme, a museum operating company, a tour operator & event management company and an international marketing services business.
The Foundation seeks to make use of Hamish’s commercial experience and skills to the benefit of all projects, particularly in identifying how donations can deliver more than just monetary benefits. It introduces new disciplines and generates wider visions on impactful and longer-term giving.
‘‘The tradition of live cathedral music is one that spans 1,400 years. It is the UK’s oldest living cultural heritage and one that I am proud to have been a part of as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral. The choir school was housed in a 13th Century Bishop’s Palace and that was where my interest in music and heritage began.”
“As a teenager I worked my way across Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA and made my way between them by working in the Norwegian and German merchant navies. Being in charge of my own destiny developed a true sense of independence, which no doubt encouraged my entrepreneurial creativity.”
